Veterans Benefits: Frequently Asked Questions (Part 3)

How can veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness seek help?

Studies say that military veterans face an elevated risk of homelessness compared to the general population, due in part to combat exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Approximately 35,000 veterans are homeless or experiencing housing insecurity at any given time in the United States.

Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness are encouraged to contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4-AID-VET (877-424-3838) for assistance 24/7/365. Homeless and at-risk veterans can also access the center’s website for more information about the VA’s homeless programs.

If a veteran doesn’t have access to a phone or the internet, they can visit their closest VA medical center without calling in advance.

For other benefits claims, veterans can locate a Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Veteran Service Officer here, or search for a VSO from another organization through the VA’s website. Enter your ZIP code or city and state, and you’ll see which VSOs serve your area.
