Veterans Benefits: Frequently Asked Questions (Part 1)

Those who have served and their family members often have questions about the veterans benefits guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The complexity of the benefits system can often make investigating benefits complicated to research on one’s own.

The VA offers veterans a range of services, including the following:

• Disability compensation

• Veteran and survivor pension programs

• Free or low- cost medical care through VA hospitals and medical facilities

• Education programs

• Housing and home loan guarantees

• Job training

• Small businesses and business loans

• Counseling

• Burials and memorials

When you need assistance in getting the benefits you or a family member deserve as a veteran or eligible dependent, take advantage of the assistance of a qualified Veterans Service Officer (VSO). VSOs can assist veterans and their families in multiple ways, such as:

• Answering questions, advising, and educating individuals and groups on what benefits are available from federal, state, county, and local resources

• Assisting persons in completing and filing benefit claims

• Representing individuals in VA hearings

Contact a Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Veteran Service Officer to assist with a claim in states that have a benefits program here, or search for a VSO from another organization through the VA’s website in states where we do not. Enter your ZIP code or city and state, and you’ll see which VSOs serve your area.
