Legally Blind Veteran Adds Wife to Award
A 78-year-old Vietnam-era veteran who was 100% unemployable visited a Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) veteran service officer (VSO) with his wife last year. He had been referred by the Massachusetts Caregiver Support Program but denied entry.
The VSO arranged a benefits counseling session and made an appointment for the veteran to bring his denial letter and medical evidence necessary to start a supplemental claim. The veteran also had a medical evaluation and a letter from the state Commission for the Blind affirming he was legally blind.
The VSO helped the veteran add his spouse to his award and access a copy of a misplaced DD 214 discharge form. He is now awaiting the results of the supplemental claim.
Contact a VVA Veteran Service Officer to assist with your claim in states that have a benefits program here, or search for a VSO from another organization through the VA’s website in states where we do not. Enter your ZIP code or city and state, and you’ll see which VSOs serve your area.
